Tahukah anda di negara Iceland membaca adalah satu budaya? Setiap hujung tahun, di musim perayaan Krismas, buku menjadi pilihan paling popular sebagai hadiah.
Jolabokaflod atau Banjir Buku Krismas menjadi amalan turun-temurun sejak 1945. Dikatakan amalan ini berasal di penghujung Perang Dunia Kedua di mana barangan menjadi langka dan mahal. Justeru buku yang masih murah dan mudah diperolehi dijadikan hadiah Krismas.
90% penduduk Iceland (populasi 362,860 orang dalam 2019) membaca sekurang-kurangnya satu buku dalam setahun dan separuh membaca 8 buku setahun menurut satu kajian yang dibuat pada 2013.. Terdapat 83 perpustakaan, bermakna satu untuk setiap 4300 orang.
Di Malaysia, terdapat 336 perpustakaan negeri/awam/daerah menurut statistik 31 Disember 2017. Berdasarkan jumlah penduduk sebanyak 32.6 juta (2019), bermakna setiap satu perpustakaan berkhidmat untuk 97000 orang! Belum diambilkira distribusi yang tidak seimbang.
Kini di Iceland malahan buku menjadi mahal kerana kos mencetak dan impot yang tinggi (Iceland boleh dikatakan tiada lagi hutan). Ditambah pula cukai yang tinggi ke atas pembelian buku mencapai 11% (2015). Maka, kita di Malaysia harus bersyukur dapat membeli buku dengan harga murah.
