An interesting read. Engrossing. As with any book, the start was rather slow. As the pages flipped, the momentum picked up steam. New insights, new perspectives. That's what reading books is all about. There are 2 ways to see the world...to see the world (of course) and the other is through reading. This book brings the reader to a time when pesantren (religious schools) in Indonesia were going through an upheaval especially in standard to be on par with the secular education. And coincidentally, it was also the time where ample opportunity for overseas education was available. However, nothing comes free..it comes with its respective consequences. Some positive, some not. The so-called modernising Islamic thought needs to be treaded carefully, lest that we lose ourselves in a quest to be more "western".

- no matter where you learn, you make who are to become
